The School Lunch Crisis

30.4 million US students can’t afford their school meals.
43% of school districts reported increasing numbers of students who can’t afford meals.
Midwest states have among the highest reported unpaid meal debt (88.1%)
Student meal debt in Missouri has reached almost $44 million
Student meal debt in Kansas reached about $23.5 million
Student meal debt in one suburban Kansas City school district reached more than $235,000 last year, and another suburban district started this school year with more than $18,000 in meal debt from students who owed no more than $20.

When families can’t pay for meals served, schools are forced to use education funds to cover the losses, resulting in the loss of education resources for all students.

When children lack lunch money, or have accrued lunch debt, they can face a range of challenges that impact both their health and the school experience, including

Stigmatization and Emotional Stress - shame and embarrassment when receiving an alternate meal or having their meal taken away. Sometimes, students may choose not to eat rather than face the embarrassment.
Reduced Access to Nutritious Meals - alternative meals, often provided when children have unpaid meal debts, may lack the nutritional value of standard lunches, which can impact students' energy levels, focus, and overall h health. For many children in need, school lunch is sometimes their only reliable meal of the day, so losing access can have serious health implications
Academic Impact—Hunger directly affects a child's ability to concentrate, retain information, and perform well in school. Studies have shown that students who don't have enough to eat are more likely to struggle academically and behaviorally and have lower attendance rates.
Missed Social Experiences - Students may also be restricted from participating in extracurricular activities or events due to lunch debt, which can isolate them further from their peers and reduce their overall engagement in school.
