Since the war began in 2022, Kommuna Lux has become a cultural voice for Ukraine — raising funds and awareness through music, and earning international accolades for their artistry, including Germany’s Iron Eversteiner folk prize. Their current lineup blends founding members with new talent, but their mission remains: joy, resilience, and unity through sound.

What is Odesa music? Odesa, Ukraine's stunning port city on the Black Sea, developed its own unique sound when musicians from other Black Sea ports met and exchanged ideas, genres, and songs early in the 19th century. Think of America's own New Orleans Jazz, and you have the right idea--a sound that's hard to describe, but you'd know it the minute you hear it. It's part Klezmer, part Balkan, and a bit of Ukrainian Traditional, all rolled up with sassy, hilarious lyrics about romance, adventures, and pickpockets! This genre, which is often called "Odesa Music" was banned as subversive in the later years of the Soviet Union.

This special concert event seeks to raise critical funds for the nonprofit Common Man for Ukraine. In 2022, Common Man for Ukraine set out to provide food, warmth, and trauma counseling to children of war in Ukraine -- and the humanitarian effort remains as strong and as urgent as ever. Using an all-volunteer network of trusted partners, Common Man for Ukraine has delivered more than 4 million pounds of food to safe houses and frontline villages in Ukraine. Recognizing the long-term effects of war, Common Man for Ukraine also provides three-week residential trauma counseling retreats to about 33 children each month. More than 1,200 children whose fathers have been killed in the war have attended our retreats. The waiting list is too long.
