Friends of USAID was born in a moment of panic.

As current and former USAID staff, we watched the agency we loved be slandered then dismantled, while too many stood by in silence. We knew the work was too important for the “woodchipper,” so we did what public servants do: we stepped up.

We launched an Instagram account and grabbed a Substack. Around the clock, we began reminding the public of something simple but important: foreign aid isn’t just from the American people - it’s for the American people.

For pennies on the dollar, foreign aid protects global health, stabilizes fragile regions, strengthens democracies, and promotes prosperity at home and abroad. It’s the reason we can keep HIV/AIDS from returning to crisis levels; why polio hasn’t made a comeback; and why we’re better prepared for global pandemics than we even realize. But only if we continue the work.

We quickly realized this wasn’t going to be a short fight. It’s a long game. And, like many in this space, we’re trying to sustain ourselves while staying focused on the mission. Because the work doesn’t pause when the spotlight moves on.
