On March 21, 2023 student art communities across the country were notified of the National Medalist winners in the 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, is a nonprofit organization that presents the Scholastic Awards. More than 100,000 students submitted more than 260,000 works of art and writing to the 2023 Scholastic Awards. Student work was selected by some of the foremost leaders in the visual and literary arts for excellence in originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Less than 2,000 works received a National Medal which places those medalists within the top 1% of all submissions.

Four Gettysburg Area High School (GAHS) students won SIX medals which is a record at GAHS and all of Adams County. Spencer Muhl won three times with Digital Media artworks:

•  American Visions Award - Techna-Genesis, 18 x 25
•  Gold Medal - Carla & Funger, 16 x 20
•  Silver Medal - Cathedral, 16 x 20

Winning one award is a big deal, but winning three is virtually unheard of! Because of the number and caliber of Spencer’s awards, he and Mrs. Julie Myers, his sponsoring educator, have been invited to participate in the National Awards Week workshops and celebration in New York City in June. The event includes an awards celebration at the iconic Carnegie Hall.

Spencer Muhl is an aspiring artist, passionate about a life lived through dreams. He paints these dreams in an effort to keep his ambitions alive. Currently in his sophomore year at GAHS, Spencer pursues a life of knowing. His expression in knowing is seen throughout his art as well as in his other academic pursuits.

National Awards Week is tailored to student interests with these types of aspirations with workshops that explore a range of knowledge through keynote speakers, workshops in practice, publishing and production of creativity paired with museum study.

This campaign is sponsored by the Gettysburg Area Education Foundation (GAEF). The gifts received through this campaign will be used to assist the GAHS art medal winner participate in the 2023 Alliance for Young Artists & Writers National Awards Week event in New York City June 7 - 9, 2023. Any remaining funds will be used to support registration fees for GASD students participating in the 2024 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition.
