Springfield’s cornerstone of Black history is growing—and you’re invited to be a part of it.

The Gammon House stands as a rare and powerful testament to Black resilience, freedom, and legacy. Built before the Civil War by George Gammon, a free Black man, it is one of the only restored Underground Railroad sites in Ohio that was Black-owned—and the only one of its kind in the region.

Today, the Gammon House is more than a historic landmark. It’s a living center of Black heritage, pride, and community—hosting tours, Juneteenth celebrations, school programs, and gatherings that lift up voices and stories of our community.

Now, we’re launching our Capital Campaign to build a new Interpretive Center—a dynamic space to amplify these powerful stories, deepen public understanding of the Underground Railroad, and expand educational and cultural programming for the entire community while Gammon House continues to serve as the artifact that it is - a real home where seven children were raised while helping people to freedom.
