Since 2012, GVA has been working in some of the world's most challenging humanitarian contexts to provide life-changing support and resources to children with autism and their families. We bring together teams of autism professionals, trauma specialists and local community experts to train key community stakeholders including parents and educators, to support and include these families in their communities.

Following the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria this past February, we heard from many of our families that they were unable to get access to such life-sustaining needs as food, shelter and medications for their child with autism because the humanitarian organizations on the ground weren't prepared to support their unique circumstances. This meant that some families slept in the streets because shelter environments were too loud and overwhelming for their child with autism while others desperately sought out food that their child could safely eat. For many children with autism, medical treatment was particularly challenging due to sensory and communication issues. We realized more needs to be done to support families who have a child with autism or other developmental disability in these times of crisis.

For countless mothers like Hene, the realities of life after a disaster, whether it be an earthquake, flood or displacement due to an armed conflict like those in Ukraine and Israel/Gaza, can be even more devastating than the disaster itself. That's why we are utilizing our humanitarian, cultural and clinical expertise working with refugee and displaced families of children with autism and other disabilities to develop a first-of-its-kind Emergency Response Training Platform to educate and equip domestic and international aid and first responder organizations with the skills and knowledge they need to better serve these families.

Our vision: to train 10,000 humanitarian workers by 2025 and ensure safer, more equitable futures for all children.
