Did you know Gerry Whestone is turning 73!?

Gerry has been the Executive Director of the Malden Warming Center for eight seasons now, since our inception in 2019. He has given tirelessly of himself to the Center, doing everything from cooking breakfasts for our guests (which get rave reviews) to taking midnight phone calls from volunteers on duty. He sets a tone for the Center, both for our volunteers and our guests, and the mutual trust and respect we offer each other.

As we celebrate Gerry's birthday, please consider supporting the Center in his honor. Our goal is to raise $7,300 -- $100 for every year Gerry has been alive!

Gerry's heart's desire is to hit $10,000, an amount of money that would cover all of the MWC's food costs for the season, or a third of our laundry costs. Gerry wants our guests to feel at home at the MWC, and this means covering necessities like our bills, but it also means we want to give our guests holiday presents and a Superbowl party and all the things that are normal when you have a stable place to live. Your support enables us to serve our guests with hospitality, and with joy.

As he often says, there is no warming center without you--and that is especially true for Gerry. He is the heart of the Warming Center. He is not, however, its pocketbook! Help us make sure we have enough money to cover the bills when we open this winter and give him one less thing to worry about.

A Totally Volunteer Organization

The Malden Warming Center (MWC) seeks to serve those experiencing homelessness by providing safe shelter and warmth during the winter months, recognizing each person’s inherent dignity and unique circumstance. Volunteers are residents of Malden, surrounding communities like Melrose and Everett, and communities as far away as York, Maine.

The MWC is to be a temporary night center for those that are homeless. It is a safe place of warmth during the harshest winter months. The MWC welcomes people with active substance use disorder and offers safe storage (no search) of the individual’s belongings, a place of warmth, comfort, hot drinks and warm soup. As much as possible warm clothing will be available and the staff will work to connect individuals to additionally needed services including more permanent housing, substance use treatment, and/or health/mental health services.
