Purr Partners was incorporated in 2009 by two long time rescuers who saw a need to help cats and kittens in rural North Carolina high kill shelters. In March of 2009, the first cats were pulled from Franklin County Shelter, and so Purr Partners entered the rescue community – with two volunteers and no budget.

Since its inception, Purr Partners has pulled over 8,000 cats and kittens from high kill shelters in central North Carolina. We now are an organization with over one hundred active volunteers and a budget of over $250,000.

The purpose of Purr Partners has always been to help those cats and kittens who are in the greatest jeopardy of losing their lives - and those are found in the rural shelters of North Carolina. These county shelters are open intake shelters, and thus cats and kittens pour in daily in huge numbers. Many of these shelters are far enough from population centers that other rescues rarely help, and in fact, in some of these shelters, Purr Partners is the only cat rescue that works to save the animals that are abandoned, surrendered, picked up as strays, or trapped.

The vast majority of the budget is dedicated to veterinary expenses since shelter cats and kittens often come into rescue with a variety of health and medical issues. Every cat and kitten that leaves Purr Partners will have been spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, and micro chipped. On average, to take a cat or kitten from shelter to adoption, it costs between $150 and $500 and sometimes much more. Adoption fees cannot cover these costs so Purr Partners must work to raise funds to make up the difference. While cats and kittens are housed in volunteer homes, the rescue provides all vet care, food, litter, and microchips every year, this gets more and more expensive, and yet every year, there are more and more animals that need help.
