2025 was a remarkable year of growth for Marine Resources Council, and we have big plans for 2026!

Financial support from individuals, corporations, and foundations has an indelible impact on the water quality, shorelines, and the viability of plant and wildlife along the lagoon. It is private dollars and passionate donors who will define the path of the Indian River Lagoon’s road to health. The MRC has been the leading proponent for the Indian River Lagoon for 40 years and stands ready to boldly move forward and lead the revitalization of our most precious natural resource.

Some of our plans for 2026 include:

Expanding our LagoonWatch citizen scientist water quality monitoring program with more volunteer monitors and dissolved oxygen probes to collect essential Lagoon health data.
Hosting our 22nd Lagoon Action Assembly---an IRL Youth Action Assembly to empower youth voices on the future of the Indian River Lagoon.
Increasing volunteer opportunities across the entire Lagoon Region.
Hosting our 6th annual Low Impact Development Conference. This year's conference theme is Rooted In Community: Low Impact Development as a Shared Solution.

How we're hoping to grow in 2026 include:

Expand our native plant nursery from primarily mangrove cultivation to include salt marsh grasses, seagrasses, buttonwood trees, and other coastal plants. These plants protect the coastal habitat and are a critical support system for the replenishment and diversity of fish and other Lagoon wildlife. The vision for our nurseries is to provide a reliable, sustainable supply of native vegetation essential for ongoing and future restoration projects.
Our Sebastian Greenway property holds great promise for additional programming beyond the propagation of native plants. Our goal is to better utilize this conservation property to support education and outreach programs for all ages, increasing MRC’s reach to the central and southern Lagoon communities.

Lagoon Giving Day 2026
