💔 Hope's Story

Five-year-old Hope came into rescue after suffering a devastating spinal injury that had already required major surgery months earlier.

But after that surgery, she never received the rehabilitation therapy she desperately needed.

By the time Hope arrived into our care, she could no longer walk using her hind legs.

Still, she refused to give up.

She dragged herself forward across the floor, determined to get wherever she wanted to go—despite pain, injury, and open wounds left behind from dragging her tiny legs.

We held onto hope that emergency neurological care, advanced imaging, and rehabilitation therapy might still give Hope a chance at better mobility and quality of life.

To help keep Hope upright and support her back end, we rigged up a sling to help her move in a more natural position while we searched desperately for answers.

Even then… she never stopped trying.

Watching Hope fight so hard to move — despite everything her little body had been through — was both heartbreaking and incredible.

💛 Searching for answers

When Hope first arrived into rescue, we knew her condition was serious.

But there were still unanswered questions.

Had her condition worsened because she never received proper rehabilitation after surgery?
Was there still a chance that advanced care or rehabilitation therapy could help her regain some function?

We refused to give up on her without answers.

Hope was rushed to the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital for emergency neurological evaluation, specialist consultations, and advanced imaging.

After examining Hope, the neurology team recommended hospitalization and an MRI the following morning.

We held our breath hoping there was still a path forward for Hope.

The MRI revealed extensive scar tissue and severe chronic spinal cord damage from her prior injury.

Surgery could not restore what had been lost.

But specialists still believed rehabilitation therapy might help improve Hope’s mobility and quality of life — and we held tightly to that hope.

💛 What Hope needs now

We can’t undo what happened to Hope.

But we can give her the safety, comfort, and support she deserves moving forward.

Hope’s journey is far from over, and she will require lifelong care to help maintain mobility, prevent complications, and give her the best quality of life possible.

Her care includes:
• Rehabilitation therapy to strengthen and coordinate movement
• Ongoing medical management and monitoring
• Mobility support, including a wheelchair for supervised use
• Lifelong support to keep her comfortable, safe, and thriving

We didn’t hesitate to get her the care she needed.
