Fundraiser Update: 2pm Sunday, September 6th, 2020

The feedback on the livestream event has been tremendous. We are working to get the recording up on YouTube shortly for people to view any segments they may have missed. We are so grateful to everyone who volunteered, participated or donated!! We can't thank you all enough!

As of this time, we have raised $49,969 for the establishment of our residential center from our event.

This event link will stay open for at least the next several days. We are still receiving donations through this page, our website and by checks payable to Garrett's Space and mailed to 1400 Granger Ave., Ann Arbor, MI 48104.

Our center will be a unique and invaluable support option for struggling young adults. Please help us provide a lifeline to this at-risk population through your gift to Garrett's Space!

Why are we holding this live-stream fundraiser?

Garrett’s Space is raising money in support of its vision of creating a holistically focused residential center (the “Center”) for struggling young adults ages 18-28.

Background on the suicide epidemic: Last month, the Center for Disease Control released a survey showing that one in four young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 considered suicide in the past month because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, according to the CDC, suicide is now the second leading cause of death among young adults ages 15-34 in the U.S.

Background on Garrett’s Space and our vision for the Center

Garrett’s Space is a non-profit established by Julie and Scott Halpert after they lost their precious son to suicide at the age of 23. Julie and Scott witnessed first-hand the critical gaps in support in our healthcare system for struggling young adults who need something more than regular visits to their therapist.

The Center will be a haven for struggling young adults ages 18-28 where they can feel safe and supported and establish critical connections. We believe this type of place might have helped restore hope for our son, Garrett, and, just as importantly, that he would have been interested in going there for help. We are convinced that the Center will benefit many young adults who are having difficulty navigating this increasingly complicated and troubled world.

We are planning to include the following types of support and activities at the Center: individual and group therapy; coping strategies for navigating tricky relationships; peer-to peer-support groups; and an extensive array of holistic activities focused on teaching healthy behaviors and promoting wellness, including meditation, yoga, healthy cooking, art, and music.

The Center will have a non-medical feel; it will be located in a place surrounded by nature, amid tranquil woods with walking paths and therapeutic pets. The residents will be embraced by a warm community of caring staff -- primarily social workers, with a medical director. We also would provide resources and support for families and loved ones. Also, we plan to support our residents after they leave the Center during what could be a particularly vulnerable time. With the University of Michigan Depression Center as our partner, our goal is to have the Center be a model that can be replicated nationwide.
