Abriendo Mentes has been serving the communities of Potrero and Brasilito since 2009.

Despite economic growth and opportunity due to tourism and foreign investment, these communities are underserved and marginalized.

Inadequate public education, informal and unstable employment, substance abuse, normalization of violence and inaccessible public services all contribute to the growing rate of poverty and extreme poverty. Women and children are especially vulnerable, and the communities have been identified as high risk for human trafficking.

In Brasilito, children have not had a public elementary school since 2012, and have not received any in -person school classes since March 2020. 90% of Abriendo Mentes participants do not have access to a computer or internet at home, making virtual learning nearly impossible.

Potrero and Brasilito are at-risk communities with little to no available resources to improve conditions. Abriendo Mentes' comprehensive programs are strategically designed to meet the urgent educational, social and economic needs of the communities: Youth development, Adult Education, Women's Empowerment and Community Engagement.
