At Health Justice Initiative, we believe that everyone deserves access to equitable health care, regardless of income or neighborhood. Too many New Yorkers face unequal health outcomes due to inadequate medical insurance, barriers to accessing respectful and effective health care, and insurmountable medical debt – often inaccurately applied. Nearly 40% of low-income households face healthcare-related legal problems and discrimination in care—yet only 2% of legal aid addresses these issues.

At a time when our neighbors are being deprived of health care options, and misinformation is rampant, HJI is closing this justice gap by offering accurate advice, community-specific resources, and legal representation. We have already provided legal services to 50 families this year. Our pilot programming in Brooklyn will expand to reach all New Yorkers in the years ahead with one on one support as well as systemic reform.
