A River Town With a Simple Idea

In the small river town of Rio Dulce, Guatemala, a tiny nonprofit is quietly changing lives one hand at a time. Hands That Work — a program of Island Missions Support, Inc. — was built around one straightforward idea: anyone who needs a hand or an arm should be able to get one. For free. No matter what.

It matters more than it sounds like it should. According to the World Health Organization, roughly 40 million people worldwide need a prosthetic limb. Most of them will never get one — not because the technology doesn't exist, but because the cost puts it out of reach. Hands That Work exists to take cost out of the equation entirely.

Simple Technology, Built to Actually Work

The hands and arms Hands That Work builds are 3D-printed using a design from Team Unlimbited, and they're mechanical, not robotic — no batteries, no electronics, nothing to charge or replace. The whole thing runs on the bend of an elbow: bend it, and the fingers close. It sounds almost too simple. That's exactly the point.

Every device is adjustable after the fact — how fast the fingers close, which direction they close, how much it takes to trigger the grip. Two people with the same device might set it up completely differently, because no two people want to use their hand the exact same way.

Free Isn't the Hard Part — Permanent Is

Plenty of organizations can hand someone a prosthetic once. Hands That Work built its whole model around what happens after that.

"I can't start a kid on a prosthetic he outgrows next year and I'm gone," one team member put it. "I've changed his life for a year, and now he's back to where he was. That's just not acceptable to me."

That's why every hand and arm comes with a promise: free for life. As a child grows, or a device wears out, they come back and get fitted for a new one — at no cost, for as long as they need it. It's not a one-time gift. It's an ongoing relationship.

"Pay Us By Breaking It"

Here's something that surprised even the team: a lot of people are hesitant to actually use their new hand at first. They're careful with it. They don't want to break something that just changed their life.

So the team tells them something that sounds backwards until you think about it: the best way to pay us back is to break it. A broken hand means someone's out there living with it — working, gripping, carrying, trying things they couldn't before. Use is the whole point. If it breaks from being used hard, that's the system working exactly as intended, and they'll get a new one.

What a Hand Means

Everyone who gets a hand from this team has a different idea of what they'll do with it first. One moment that's stuck with the team: a little girl, given a hand for the first time, tried to make a heart shape with her sister — something the two of them used to do together, and couldn't anymore. Her sister looked at her and said, "Now you can do it by yourself."

It's a small gesture. It's also everything the program is for.

Growing: Legs, Braces, and Stethoscopes

Hands That Work started with hands and arms. It hasn't stopped there. The program has recently expanded to include prosthetic legs, mobility braces, and stethoscopes for local health workers — reaching more people, in more ways, who couldn't otherwise afford the care or equipment they need.

The Goal: 100 of Each

This year, the goal is simple to say and huge in what it means: 100 hands, 100 arms, 100 legs, 100 braces, and 100 stethoscopes. That's $31,500 — and it's 500 lives changed.

Every gift below funds one specific piece of that goal, start to finish:

● $45 funds a hand

● $60 funds an arm

● $160 funds a leg

● $25 funds a brace

● $25 funds a stethoscope

Give any amount, or pick exactly what you want to fund. 100% goes directly to the program.

You Could Be the Reason

Not many people get to say they personally gave someone their hand back. You can.

Every gift on this page has a name attached to exactly what it does — not "overhead," not "the fund." A hand. An arm. A leg. A wrist brace instead of a popsicle stick and tape. When you give, you're not a donor number. You're the direct, provable reason one specific person gets to work, carry, hold, or stand again.

Give once, and you're part of this year's 100 of Each. Give on a schedule, and you're something more:

● Grip Founders (monthly) — one of the first, most consistent names behind this program.

● The Reach Circle (quarterly) — a small, committed group funding real impact, every three months.

● The Stride Society (yearly) — the top tier, funding a dozen life-changing devices in a single gift.

And because Island Missions Support is a registered 501(c)(3), every gift — one-time or recurring — is tax-deductible. You get the feeling of watching someone get their hand back. You also get the receipt.
