Ten years ago, we planted the first seeds. This October 18, we celebrate the beginning of our tenth harvest season.

What started in 2016 at four Yeshiva day schools has grown into something we only dreamt of: a nationwide web of over 50 school and camp garden partnerships, thousands of students who have pressed seeds into soil and said a bracha over food they grew themselves, and a generation of Jewish children who know — in their hands, hearts, and minds — that the Torah is as alive as the earth beneath their feet.

וַיִּקַּח ה’ אֱלֹהִ-ם אֶת־הָאָדָם וַיַּנִּחֵהוּ בְגַן־עֵדֶן לְעבְדָהּ וּלְשׁמְרָהּ׃
Hashem settled the Human in the garden of Eden, to till it and tend it.

(Genesis 2:15)

The Avodah of Ten Years

For ten years, we did the Avodah. We dug, we toiled, and we tended. We built relationships, developed curricula, tested and refined the model. We made it normal, genuinely, beautifully normal, for a Jewish child to step out of the building and into the beit midrash of the garden and uncover the Torah waiting there.

But the Torah rarely gives us a singular, independent mitzvah. L'ovdah u'L'shomra means to till it and tend it. The work of building is only the first season. The deeper work — the work that makes an ecosystem truly self-sustaining — is Shmirah. Guarding. Tending. Ensuring that what has been planted doesn't just survive, but takes root deeply enough to weather any storm.

Roots That Held

Baruch Hashem, we have thrived through a pandemic, through our homeland under attack, through our friends and family in bomb shelters. We have held our partner schools through years of disruption and uncertainty. Our roots held. Now, as we enter our second decade, the question isn't whether GrowTorah works. The question is whether we will tend it with the same intention we brought to building it.

That is what this campaign is about.

Honoring the Shorashim

This year's Harvest Feast is different. There is no single honoree at the center of the evening. Instead, we are honoring the institutions that have been the Shorashim, the roots, of everything GrowTorah has built: our regional Shorashim-tier school garden partners, the educators who said yes when we asked them to get their hands dirty, the administrators who carved out space in crowded schedules for something that doesn't appear on a standardized test but matters profoundly, and the students who will carry these lessons for a lifetime.

These school partners are not vendors. They are not clients. They are co-creators of a thriving ecosystem; and on June 7, we are honoring them together with the community that made it possible.

Why Your Gift Matters

GrowTorah is sustained by three streams of support: our partner schools, foundation grants, and community giving. The first two are institutional relationships — built on results, on data, on proof of concept. The third is different in kind. When you make a gift to GrowTorah, you aren't paying for a service or validating a model. You are saying: I want this to exist in the world. I believe our community needs this. No grant letter can say that. No school contract can say that. That declaration; personal, voluntary, unconditional, is what this campaign is built on.
