Wyatt knows the sound of a hospital hallway at 3 a.m. He knows which nurses sneak him extra popsicles and how long an infusion takes down to the minute. He's nine.

What Wyatt didn't know — until last summer — was the sound a reel makes when something big takes the bait. The way a campfire pops when you throw on fresh wood. What it feels like to be the kid telling the story, instead of the kid everyone worries about.

For one weekend, Wyatt wasn't a patient. He was a fisherman. He out-fished his dad (he will tell you this within thirty seconds of meeting him), stayed up too late around the fire, and slept the kind of sleep that only comes after a full day outside.

His mom told us later: "That was the first time in two years I watched my son just be a kid."
