Sapphire has been through more than most axolotls ever will. This gentle, curious amphibian was deeply loved by her original owner, Abby, who spent over $1,100 trying to treat Sapphire’s recurring anal prolapse—a painful and potentially life-threatening condition that’s now happened three times.

Despite meticulous care, including temperature regulation, sugar soaks, parasite treatment, and specialized feeding, Sapphire’s condition continued to worsen. Abby wrote:
