Higher Achievement offers experiences that expose scholars to the richness of their community and the opportunities that lie ahead for them. With your support, scholars have access to:

College visits, where scholars tour campuses and begin to envision exciting options for their futures. College visits have included tours of Temple University, Bowie State University, the University of Maryland, James Madison University, Howard University, and more.
Field trips where scholars experience fun and educational opportunities. Field trips have included visits to skating rinks, museums and cultural sites, sporting events, theater performances, bowling alleys, local parks, career days at local businesses, and more.
Electives where scholars can explore new and emerging interests. Electives have included cooking, ASL, drumming, STEM, yoga, cosmetology, poetry, sports, and more.

About Higher Achievement

Middle school is a pivotal time for academic and social development that sets young people up for post-secondary success. Higher Achievement's afterschool program for middle school scholars combines academic enrichment with social-emotional skill building, culminating in placement in college preparatory high schools.

Academic Enrichment and Homework Support: Higher Achievement's academic enrichment sharpens scholars' reading comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, critical thinking, and writing and presentation skills while giving them time to complete homework.
Social-Emotional Skill Building: Curriculum and activities are grounded in social justice and the development of social-emotional skills. During mentoring and community meetings, scholars discuss current events, build confidence in their abilities, and advance their leadership skills.
Mentoring for High School Readiness: Scholars work with a mentor weekly to define and pursue their personal and educational goals, gain
awareness of high school, college, and career options, and take steps to access those options.
