Democracy isn’t promised. It’s protected.

We’ve long held certain truths about democracy as sacred. We believed our rights would be protected, that our votes would count, and that the branches of government would be upheld. But this is no longer the case.

At the national level, we are seeing the dismissal of courts, the erasure of DEI, the violent targeting of immigrants and LGBTQ+ communities, and so much more. All of this makes it clear: democracy survives only when we step up to defend it.

And even in California, progress is fragile.

This year alone, dozens of bills have been introduced to roll back everything we’ve fought for — including attacks on reproductive freedom, local election offices, and efforts to weaken the Voter’s Choice Act.

Advocacy organizations are stretched thin. Grant funding is disappearing. The pressure on the LWVC is growing. We’re being asked to do more: to show up, speak out, and stand firm.
