Every intersex story begins with a single moment. What's yours? Perhaps it was the moment you entered this world or the moment your intersex child joined your family. Maybe it was the moment you received your variation diagnosis, or maybe your story is written without a formal diagnosis, your details and experiences shaping your intersex identity just the same. Perhaps it was the quiet spark of inspiration - the moment of "wow, that sounds like me" - when you heard another intersex person courageously share their story with the world.

Each of our stories is as unique as the stars in the sky. No matter your story - no matter your path and all it's twists and turns - one thing remains consistent. No story is written entirely in isolation. While every person’s journey is uniquely their own, it is the collective strength, warmth, and resilience of our community that nurtures our resilience and helps us navigate the path forward.

About InterConnect

InterConnect was founded in 1996 by attorney and activist Sherri Groveman Morris as the Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome Support Group (AISSG), a small gathering of adult women with a single intersex variation. The group established it's 501(c)3 status in 2001. 30 years since it's founding, the group has expanded to include the full diversity of those identifying as intersex or having a Variation of Sexual Characteristics (VSC).

InterConnect has adapted to meet the needs of our membership through changes in medical, political, and psychosocial landscapes around intersex/VSCs. Traditional physician education and psychosocial narratives taught - and in many cases, still teach - that surgeries, hormone therapy, and shielding a child from their diagnosis would ‘cure’ an intersex child and allow them to lead a ‘normal’ life. During InterConnect's inaugural meeting, doctors understood that these surgeries and hormone therapies led to lifelong health issues and parental secrecy led to shame and broken families. Providers became allies. Patients became partners.

By providing crucial support and affinity space for affected adults, children, families, and allies, InterConnect continues to thrive as a cornerstone of intersex community in the United States and North America.
