About the “Art & Mind” series

"Art & Mind," is a virtual Zoom disability-accessible film event series supporting creative marginalized women and marginalized genders to share their journeys. This event uses short films, documentaries, entrepreneur features, and speaking engagements from professionals such as therapists and activists to raise awareness about social issues these creatives face.

The Sistas Uprising Fund logo is a circular logo. Inside, to the upper left corner, is a stylized blazing sun overlooking pink and yellow lotus flowers and bright green Lily pads. To the upper right are two hands, inspired by Co-founder Claire’s hands wearing a silver frog ring and silver yin and yang ring holding a tiny metal watering can covered in multi-colored paint splats. Rainbow-hued water is inside the watering can. The can is pouring rainbow-hued water onto a brown hand below, holding two lotus sprouts in the middle of their palm. The background is a watercolor style of blue and white. Outside of the logo at the top is curved text that says “SISTA CREATIVES RISING PRESENTS.” Curved at the bottom, it says “THE SISTAS UPRISING FUND.”

About Sista Creatives Rising

Sista Creatives Rising (SCR) is a project and concept founded by Black, invisibly disabled mother-daughter duo Claire Jones (age 60) and Amaranthia Sepia (age 23). Together, under SCR they develop disability-accessible events focused on marginalized women and marginalized genders called "Art & Mind." We are a grassroots project, not an organization or non-profit.

SCR seeks to strengthen our community by increasing the visibility of these artists and providing them with affordable and accessible resources. At the same time, we're working to address the lack of payment artists receive when accepted by open calls. One way we're doing this is by developing our Sistas Uprising Fund.

“Get Ahead of Life Before Life Gets Ahead of You,”
delves into Sista Creatives Rising’s co-creator, Claire Jones, and her 2022 cancer journey. Black women have been forced into living within the strong and resilient stereotype and burdened with the idea that we must nurture others without putting our needs and mental health first. Claire believes this stressor manifested as a spinal tumor. Claire faces her trauma by navigating physical and occupational therapy to be one of the 1% that can walk again after high-risk spinal surgery.

This showcase reflects how stereotypes, misogynoir, and expectations placed on Black women of the diaspora can manifest as health crises. It will highlight the fear several Black women have of American healthcare.

FEATURING A PLETHORA OF ART:

- ORIGINAL MUSIC COMPOSED BY AUSTRALIAN DISABILITY ACTIVIST MEL CHILIANIS

- CLAIRE'S ORIGINAL SPOKEN WORD POEMS PAIRED WITH PERFORMANCE ART

- VISUAL NARRATIVES AND INTERVIEWS BETWEEN CLAIRE & HER DAUGHTER, CO-CREATOR AMARANTHIA SEPIA

A Focus on Disability Accessibility & COVID Awareness

The event will focus on disability, health disparities amongst BIWOC & femmes of color, and the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on disabled, immunocompromised and chronically ill folks of color. We are disabled and immunocompromised ourselves. As a result, we are still masking, and "Still COVIDing." See our "Black & Still COVIDing" Story Project

Three circle portraits of Black activists are lined up in the middle of the poster, each frame with green vines and one red and one yellow sunflower, kind of like a wreath.
