Six days until Art & Mind! Some BTS Photos of Claire’s Documentary
ID 1 This image shows five masks in varying angles and positions on top of a structure covered with black fabric. The top masks are partials of exaggerated male faces from the upper stand to the lower stands. They are all colored different shades of brown. A wooden masks of a woman with small beaded eyes, a wide sawdust nose and rope to represent dreadlocks stands to the top right. A plain white wall rises up in the background. In front of the wall are hangings of colorful, African cloths. In front of the structure is Claire, a 60-year-old Black woman with a shaved head and large red glasses. Attached to the glasses are a gold chain. She is looking to the left. Claire is wearing a black and grey geometric kn95 mask, a black button up shawl, and has a black cane firmly planted in front of her. ID 2 A monochrome image of Claire in a white halter jumpsuit against a pitch black background. Incense smoke surrounds her. She is wearing a white KN95 while slightly leaning back, with her arms above her head. ID 3 Claire is lying down on her back porch in her white halter top and floral kimono style top, surrounded by vibrant cloths and pillows. By her feet is a bowl of dried sunflower petals. Next to her head is her white floral patterned cane. On the bottom right you can see a bit of a black tripod. Her tortoise shell glasses are resting above her face, and you can see her eyes closed as she enjoys the sun. ID 4 A printed photo of Claire (on right) and Amaranthia, her daughter (on left). It’s a photo of Amaranthia was four years old. Both have medium length black locs decorated with turquoise beads. Both are wearing blue tope. Amaranthia is wearing a blue sweater with a picture of Sully from Monsters Inc. It says “Scare Team” in yellow text.” The photo is on top of a red cloth with a black ink floral pattern.

Some behind-the-scenes photos I took and edits I’ve made of my Mom, Claire, as we filmed for her spoken word performance pieces. The first photo shows some African-inspired Caribbean masks she made in the 90s. See the full performance pieces in the documentary I made about my Mom’s cancer journey, “A 50% Chance of Paralysis: Get Ahead of Life Before Life Gets Ahead of You!” featured in our virtual film event, “Art & Mind: I Know Who I Am! Journeys of Women of Color & Femme-Expressing Creatives.”

As we developed these performances to tell her story of how she went against the odds, I couldn’t believe the immense progress my Mom has made with her recovery. You’d have no idea she spent eight weeks last year in a neck and torso brace (equivalent to a car crash brace), needed help bathing, or was in a wheelchair and using a rollator for a few months. Many nurses who saw her medical chart said it looked like a disaster - like someone near paralyzed. However, when they met her, they couldn’t believe how vibrant, determined, and motivated my Mom was. She took her first steps five days after her first chemo, two months after high-risk spinal surgery. Her chemo started two days after getting approved to take her brace off.

Please support this mother-daughter film and our team of creatives that made this possible! We hope to see you there!

We reached over $1K! THANK YOU!
Amaranthia, a 23 year old Black woman, and her 60-year old Mom, Claire Jones, are shown sitting on their back porch steps with trees and a bright blue sky behind them. Amaranthia, to the right, is wearing a punk style leather jacket, black and white striped leggings with sunflower prints, and a black and white jagged striped crop top. Claire is wearing a vibrant red, green and yellow large thin scarf and dress with white pants and a denim jacket. Claire is holding red and yellow sunflowers. The Sista Creatives Rising logo is on the bottom left corner, and at the top of the image is the Sistas Uprising Fund logo. Text reads: We’ve Reached Over $1K For The Sistas Uprising Fund!

WE JUST REACHED OVER $1K!!! Thank you to everyone who’s signed up so far for “Art & Mind: I Know Who I Am!” (over 40 attendees) and for helping us create these grants for BIWOC and femme-expressing creatives of color! We are in awe of all the support received this year - we’re almost at 800 followers on IG, have met so many wonderful creatives, activists, disabled folks and fellow ‘still coviding’ peeps. And we’ve received our first ever grants and sponsorships for SCR/Art & Mind.

As many know, it is difficult for Black people, especially Black women, to receive any kind of funding for a project. Business Insider reports that companies led by Black women usually receive less than 1% of all venture capital funding. Although we’re not an LLC just yet, but plan to become one next year, this has been a harrowing thing to learn. We’ve had to fight to be taken seriously, especially as Black disabled women with such an experimental project.

So from the bottom of our hearts - thank you, thank you, thank you! We are still accepting donations since the more we can give out to artists, the better! And we hope to reach over 50 attendees!

So close to our goal! Plus we received a grant from The Puffin Foundation!
Text reads: $912/$1000 of our BIWOC & Femmes Of Color Grant Fundraising Goal! Only $88 to go! Image ID: Amaranthia, a 23 year old Black woman, learns against her home’s back porch. Amaranthia is wearing a black, leather jacket decorated with white lines and silver studs. Underneath she is wearing a zebra print cami and below that she is wearing fitted pants decorated with huge colorful sunflowers on a background of black and white horizontal stripes. Clasping her waist is a black silver studded belt with silver chains hanging down from front to back. Amaranthia's black dreadlocs, emblazoned with silver and copper hair clips, fall in a wave across her face over her black framed glasses. To her left is a green square poster placed on a brown wooden stool decorated with fresh yellow and red sunflowers. On both sides of the poster are canes. On the poster is the Sista Creatives Rising logo, which is a yellow circular logo with a brow—skinned voluptuous woman with a lotus head is sitting in the lotus position. Snflower and vine doodles decorate the corners of the photo. At the top left is a spiky design containing text. Under the SCR poster is a red spiky design with more text inside.
Amaranthia poses outside on her back porch next to the SCR logo and some sunflower doodles.

Thank you again for the phenomenal support and donations for our Sistas Uprising Fund, and for all the sign ups! We’re at 40 attendees now! Right before I was about to send this we got a donation of $200 which brought us from 71% to 91% of our goal! Thank you so so much! This means $88 to go! We are two weeks and two days away from the event, we really hope we can reach $1k within that time period! Help us spread the word so we can reach our goal!

We are also happy to announce that we are recipients of The Puffin Foundation 2023 grant ($1,500!) With this funding, we’ll be able to get a MacBook Pro to help us create more content for future events.

Looking forward to seeing you at Art & Mind!
