Barriers for First-Gen Students

A first-generation college student is any student who is the first in their family to pursue a four-year degree. Graduating high school students across the nation are faced with deciding whether to continue their education or enter the workforce. Many seek higher education to improve career opportunities and gain economic prosperity and social mobility.

Without the tools familiar to students raised in college-educated families, scholars intending to become first-generation college grads will face significant disadvantages. These barriers demonstrate the need for a support system for local students looking to enroll as first-generation college students—which is exactly the need First Gen Success seeks to address.

College Readiness - What We Do!

Excellence Program

Prep-HER-ation Modules: an intensive personal development program, to cultivate

the full potential of each scholar. Scholars learn strategies to handle the

challenges of college life.

Mentorship Program

We partner scholars with female professionals. Our mentoring community

encourages our scholars to be the leaders and changemakers they dream to be.

First Gen Success Scholarship

The scholarship includes necessary costs for books, while also providing

resources such as money for laundry or food if the dining hall is closed. Donating

is the most direct way to help our scholars succeed in college and beyond

We Need Your Support

As tuition prices in the U.S. continue to rise, affording college has become an obstacle even for students whose families have been saving for them. Tuition becomes all the more daunting if family financial support isn’t an option.

FGS has set a goal to raise $20,000 during #GivingTuesdayCLT. The funds will be used for scholarship funds for each scholar in the 2023-24 cohort. It will be used for books & supplies, dorm supplies, miscellaneous items, travel, laundry costs, and food. This assistance will ease their transition into college and lessen stress levels over financial matters.

If you cannot give through donations, we always look for bright and passionate volunteers to help us accomplish our mission. Volunteerism is at the core of our program. If you are interested in getting involved and assisting our programming, complete a quick interest form on our website.

Our primary goal for this year’s #GivingTuesdayCLT?

Secure $20,000 for scholarship funds for scholars in the 2023-24 cohort
Attract five new programming volunteers
Onboard 100 new Facebook and Instagram followers

Why is this our goal, and what impact will it have?

$20,000 – to support 16 scholars: books & supplies, dorm supplies, miscellaneous, travel, laundry costs, and food.
The new volunteers will help with programming support.
New followers will increase FGS’s social influence and positively impact our community engagement .
