This 3-hour workshop will break down the basics of backpacking, including different backpacking styles, beginner-friendly gear, shelters, sleep systems, food storage, and how to stay comfortable and organized in the backcountry. Through practical demonstrations and discussion, participants will gain a clearer understanding of what backpacking actually looks like and what matters most when getting started.

We’ll also discuss common beginner concerns like gear costs, carrying weight, sleeping outside, and feeling “ready” enough, while sharing affordable rental options and simple ways to ease into backpacking without needing to buy everything right away.

The workshop will also introduce TrailBound’s educational 4-trip backpacking series, designed to gradually build confidence, skills, and self-sufficiency over time.

Whether you’re considering your first overnight trip or simply want to better understand backpacking, this workshop is designed to leave you feeling more informed, comfortable, and confident taking that next step outdoors.

Advance registration is required. A $15 fee applies, with all proceeds donated to the Catskill Center to support ongoing conservation, education, and stewardship work throughout the Catskills
