Each year, Hurricane season brings new impacts to the already deteriorating and dangerous prisons, jails, and detention centers in their path and the people inside them. The Department of Corrections (and all other institutions "responsible" for the lives, health, and safety of people they incarcerate) have proven time and again that they will fail to meet peoples' basic safety needs before, during, and after a storm.

While some units have evacuated in the past, others have gone on lockdown, frequently while short staffed. In such situations, access to needed water, food, and power can be scarce for days to weeks following a hurricane. We know that hurricanes often leave incarcerated people among the many with their belongings lost and destroyed.

This fund is an ongoing platform to raise money to support people in stockpiling resources that are not guaranteed to them. The money will go directly to loved ones on the outside to put on the books and commissaries of people inside facilities impacted by hurricanes. When possible, we will also try to put money directly on people's books. The first $200 will be used to reimburse trusted comrades who've been supporting folks inside before this fund was published.
