About The John P. Carey, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund

On March 5, 2014, the world lost an extraordinary soul when John P. Carey, a graduate of the Camden Catholic High School Class of 1983, tragically lost his life while protecting a mother and child he did not know. While his family and friends lost a beloved son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend that night, John's vibrant laughter, heroic spirit, and legacy of ultimate selflessness have never left those who knew him.

John attend Camden Catholic High School, where he was known to many as "Buckwheat", "Foot", "Bear" or "Big John". He was a true powerhouse both on and off the field, famously kicking for Camden Catholic and later Ursinus College. He was involved in football and many aspects of school life, but above all, he was known for his loyalty, humor and selflessness. To honor his legacy of selflessness and commitment to others, the John P. Carey, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established, later expanded to also honor his parents, Jack and Audrey, reflecting a family legacy of faith, service and community.

The fund is administered through the 1887 Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that supports Camden Catholic High School and its educational mission. The scholarship is intended to assist eligible students who demonstrate financial need and embody the values of character, leadership and service central to the CCHS community. Athletic participation is not a factor in selection.

Those who wish to honor John's legacy are invited to make a gift of any amount. Contributions support tuition assistance for qualfying students at Camden Catholic High School, helping them benefit from the school's academic, spiritual, and co-curricular programs while carrying forward the values that defined John's life.

The 1887 Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose sole focus and mission is to support, secure, and enhance the rich tradition and legacy of Camden Catholic High School, Cherry Hill, NJ. The Foundation's broad-based initiative provides funding to build the future of Camden Catholic in the areas of capital improvements, long and short-term financial support, community awareness, student financial aid, and investments in athletics, science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.
