Steve visited the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy while on a work trip to Kenya a few years ago. While there he toured the school, was inspired by their mission and met many of the young girls. A few months later, Dalifa, a former student and now a teacher, came to the United States to raise awareness for KGSA. She spoke of her mission to Educate, Inspire and Empower young women. After meeting Dalifa, we immediately wanted to support this special school.

We've planned a fun night with drinks and heavy appetizers. Please RSVP, so we can plan ahead. Our goal is to raise $10,000 to educate, inspire and empower 10 girls in Kibera.

Dalifa Kassan graduated from KGSA in 2012 and pursued a Bachelor's Degree in Education and Science from Maseno University. She teaches math and chemistry at KGSA and is the proud mother to a toddler girl. Dalifa is pursuing her Master's Degree in Education Administration and dreams of leading the school one day. This is her second visit to the USA, and she's excited to meet new people and visit with dear friends.

Background on the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy:

44% of girls in Kenya don't finish high school.

The Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA) provides a free, holistic secondary school education to 130 girls annually in Kibera, Nairobi – the largest informal settlement in Africa.

KGSA’s model cares for the whole girl - academics, extra-curricular activities, nutrition, healthcare, mentorship programs, college scholarships and a new dormitory that opened in July of 2021. KGSA unlocks potential, expands opportunities, and enables each girl with the ability to shape her future. Research shows that girls who earn a secondary education earn twice as much and women with a college education earn up to three times as much as their peers with no education.

KGSA was founded originally as a soccer club for girls in 2002 by Kiberan resident Abdul Kassim who recognized the unique challenges that girls faced in his community. Over the years KGSA has grown from a soccer club to a one room classroom with 13 girls to a multi-faceted school. To date KGSA has graduated over 370 girls including 70 who have pursued higher education such as Dalifa, who teaches math and chemistry at KGSA and is pursuing a master's degree, and Asha, a journalist and activist featured in the New York Times and National Geographic. Our vision is to harness the power of the #girleffect to create a stronger, more resilient Kibera.
