At our root, Kearny Street Workshop is a community that looks to art as a source of connection and empowerment. Time and time again, we’ve seen how community building is at the heart of brighter futures. In times of unbelievable injustice, countless stories of bravery also appear as an antidote to the painful reality we are facing together. KSW is just one of those stories, and it is also a community that we deeply care for.

When times are trying, community is not a term we use generally and it is not a term we use lightly. It means a group of people living in a specific place, or those that share a characteristic/affinity, or it can mean a feeling of fellowship and camaraderie. Ultimately in a world that tries to keep us from prioritizing community, and to stop feeling, it is rebellious to prioritize care for others, above the noise of disconnection.

Community is Everything is about organizing a life around care.

It is both a people and a feeling because at its root, Community is Everything speaks to a feeling of grounded love and the action it takes to reflect that love. Love between family, friends, neighbors, acquaintances or strangers we see every day and strangers we don’t. Community is Everything means that our survival is guaranteed, that our hopes and dreams still matter, and that by supporting one another, we will create a better future.

Community is Everything means in order to strengthen our resolution and expand our capacity, we need to build a fluid relationship to community, knowing when to go big, and when to come home. Our communities have power that can’t be denied. Speaking truth to systemic power is power in and of itself. Engaging with art and gathering around culture is a way to connect across shared goals.
