From a dream of bringing Black dance to the community

13 years ago, INNERGY hosted our first ever FREE master dance, fitness and wellness class at the Dearborn Street YMCA in Mobile Alabama. Tyra, along with other dance and fitness enthusiasts in the area, taught Horton, Zumba, Jazz and praise dance. We also gave away free tickets for attendees to witness The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. For many, this was their first experience in dance and wellness classes as well as their first experience witnessing Black professional dancers take the stage.

To providing paid opportunities for professional Black artists in Alabama

Over the years, we’ve expanded to a professional dance company. Contacting dozens of Black artists to Keep That Same INNERGY as performers, teachers and preservers of the rich and diverse dance forms of the African Diaspora. Now, more than ever, we are ready to bring our work to even more audiences and provide more BIPOC artists opportunities to inspire through touring, training and professional development.

And producing a historical full length evening show and a multitude of master dance classes.

13 years later, You continue to Keep That Same INNERGY! You helped us produce our first ever full length evening show; a historic event for the state of Alabama and the city of Huntsville. Because of your support hundreds of school aged children have been impacted by our work. As a direct result of your dedication to us over the years, our communities are enlightened with the true gift of dance.

Every step of the way, community members like you Keep That Same INNERGY that helps us bring the gift of dance to diverse communities. Beginning November 29th, we'll be asking you to KEEP That Same INNERGY again and donate towards our $20,000 goal. Help make sure we have the resources to reach more individuals with Master Classes, expand our professional dance company, and develop our knowledge to invite more communities to come closer!

Who We Are

We are a 501(c)3 Nonprofit professional dance company founded by Tyra J. Ike Asogwa in 2009. After her first experience with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Tyra knew she needed to bring high quality dance training and exposure to marginalized communities. It was from her experience with the legendary Hope Boykin that sparked the drive in her to spearhead INNERGY. Providing opportunities for Black women choreographers, minority dance artists and individuals with the desire to dance and be well.

Our Mission

Our mission is to strengthen the mind, body and spirit through dance and wellness. We do so by curating dance productions and educating through master classes in Alabama and around the world with an emphasis in serving marginalized communities.

Our Objective

The objective of our non-profit 501(c)3 organization is to provide consistent, equitable access and exposure to the arts. We provide a platform for artists to develop and master their craft through our professional dance company, educate audiences of the rich diverse dance forms of the African Diaspora and strengthen our communities through dance and wellness classes.

Our Impact

Although based in Alabama, our reach is broad. Our communities impacted include Mobile County Public Schools, Huntsville City Schools, University of Alabama, The Mobile Museum of Art, Dance Theatre of Huntsville, the Kennedy Center as well as Europe, Canada and all over the Southeastern United States.

Overall, we seek to

- Reach more BIPOC communities so that we may diversify dance techniques and provide equitable access to the arts by honoring our mission to give the gift of dance and wellness to the world. Guide Alabamians to broaden our exposure in celebrating the culturally diverse art forms of the African Diaspora.

-Expand our professional dance company to provide even more paid platforms for artists to continue work and impact the community. Our performance and master class series will provide the community and artists opportunities to forge new relationships and growth in diverse regions they might not have the opportunity to reach on their own.

- Develop our knowledge in the rich and diverse dance forms of the African Diaspora to bring back to the state of Alabama and beyond.
