Keiko’s Story (by Carrie Dubois)

The sudden passing of volunteer extraordinaire Keiko Smith in 2022 left the Belmont and San Mateo County community in shock. Her extensive volunteer work with the Belmont Redwood Shores District, School Force, Carlmont High School, and the PTA made her a beloved figure, especially for at-risk youth. Keiko was a passionate advocate for marginalized communities, constantly championing the needs of foster and court-involved youth, whom she lovingly referred to as “our kids.”

Following her memorial service, I began discussing ways to honor Keiko’s legacy. When I learned about the St. James Community Development Corporation’s New Beginnings housing project for transition-age foster youth, I realized it was the perfect opportunity. After meeting with Reverends Marlyn Bussey and Penny Nixon, I received their support to raise funds in Keiko’s honor. The unit facing Monte Diablo Avenue will be (EIN 38-4137842) named Keiko’s House, with other units honoring additional community leaders.

The map below highlights the courtyard facing Keiko’s House, where personalized brick pavers will be installed to recognize donors contributing at the $2,500 level and above. These bricks will feature the names of our generous supporters and may also include inspirational messages—serving as daily words of encouragement for the young adults who walk through this space each day.
