The Wanyange Primary School Community Library, built with passion in 2016, is in dire need of your help. The wooden bookshelves and books they hold, once a symbol of hope for the future, have succumbed to time and wear. Our library, a home away from home to over 1000 students, has become a storage room due to extensive damage.

The Story:

In June 2023, our founding director, Ashiraf Kaaba, made a poignant return to the MM Wanyange Primary School in Jinja, Uganda, only to find the once vibrant library, established in 2016 through a Peace Corps grant, in a state of neglect, used merely as a storage area. This library, which embarked on its journey under the stewardship of Vashalice Kaaba and Agnes Kibiira as the first community librarians, was a cornerstone of learning in the Wanyange District. Since its establishment, Hearts 4 Community Action has been pivotal in orchestrating fundraisers and managing donations with the help of community members and global supporters. This collaborative effort has been key not only in maintaining the library but also in supplying essential resources such as school supplies and uniforms for our students.

However, the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 severely impacted the school, forcing the redirection of funds, originally allocated for library maintenance, to scholarships and vital aid for families dependent on the school. The situation worsened due to environmental adversities, including heavy rains and a catastrophic termite infestation, which led to the loss of over half of our book collection and damaged wooden bookshelves and learning desks.

Now, in 2024, the beloved library of MM Wanyange Primary School is teetering on the edge of survival, grappling with the consequences of these compounded challenges. It urgently requires support to rebuild and restore its crucial role in the educational landscape of our community.

The Solution:

We are launching a vital initiative to transform our library. We will replace the damaged wooden bookshelves with sturdy metallic ones and construct robust metallic learning desks that can withstand environmental elements. But this is more than just a physical renovation; it's about revitalizing a sanctuary for learning and creativity. To achieve this, we are raising funds for materials, labor from our technical team, paint, and other supplies. Additionally, we welcome book donations, which can be contributed through our provided Amazon link.
