We invite you to join us for Walk of Reciprocity and Accountability: Los Angeles – a partnership between Owens Valley Indian Water Commission, Accelerate Resilience L.A., and Walking Water.

This October 25th, we are offering a one day walk in Los Angeles as part of our Resilience and Accountability series. Our intention is to continue relationship building – with the waters and lands, with our communities, our organizations, and ourselves – as a contribution towards a living system that prioritizes respect, relations, relatives, and reciprocity. We walk to be in connection with the waters, to move slowly, and to be together with a collective intention.

Water is ceremony, relationships, sacredness, health, and life. Water is everything. Walking with water signifies respect, responsibility, and awareness of its importance to all our relations. For us, water is a sacred relative we must protect, respect, and honor. When we walk, our connection with water deepens, and we reaffirm our commitment to these principles and toward a future that honors and supports all communities.

The walk also aims to explore Los Angeles’ path to water independence, the impacts of L.A.’s water extraction on the Paiute and Tongva peoples, and how we can collectively build a resilient and accountable L.A., one that is sourced in reciprocity. Reciprocity is a practice and a relationship between living beings based on mutually beneficial exchange. Within this practice of reciprocity is an understanding of Indigenous stewardship, which centers care for water as a living relative. Can Los Angeles be a model for others to become accountable and adopt Indigenous principles of stewardship to address the climate emergency and multiple harms we face for our future generations.

With this walk, we hold ourselves accountable to learning, listening, and being a good relative, thereby empowering the voices of those fighting injustices, and adding our voices to theirs. By actively participating, we foster a deeper understanding and commitment to support the communities affected by water appropriation, ensuring their struggles and stories are heard and respected.

We will walk a path along the L.A. river, from Maywood to Cudahy, and be with themes of where our water comes from, story sharing on the impacts of water extraction on peoples, lands, and waters, and how we can step into a circle of reciprocity. In addition to a 3 mile walk, we will circle up, listen to stories, and share our questions and thoughts.
