Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Defense: Protecting Flathead Lake from invasive species has never been more urgent, with invasive mussels recently discovered close to home in the Snake River near Twin Falls, Colorado River, and Lake Oahe. Your support enables us to advocate for increased AIS funding at the 2025 Montana legislature, expand our education and outreach, and strengthen local inspection stations to keep Flathead Lake mussel-free.
Education and Future Stewards: Our scholarship program and field trips inspire the next generation of environmental stewards. Thanks to last year’s Giving Tuesday campaign, our first scholarship recipient, Mollie Sydnor, is now studying environmental science. This spring, our Becoming Watershed Citizens program introduced 270 students to the wonders of Flathead Lake’s ecosystem, guided by FLBS staff and 14 volunteers. These hands-on experiences encourage young people to care for and protect our watershed.
Watershed Health: A healthy watershed depends on the thoughtful care of shorelines and landscapes. Through education and action, we’re promoting buffer gardens with native plants to reduce runoff, addressing septic leachate, and tackling nonpoint source pollution. These initiatives reduce contaminants, improve water quality, and support the rich biodiversity of our lake and surrounding habitat.
Water Quality Monitoring: Seasonal water monitoring through our Swim Guide program and swimmer’s itch education program with CSKT provides essential data that help us protect Flathead Lake’s waters and support its recreational value.
Conservation – Critical Lands: In 2024, over 1,200 acres of wetlands and riparian forests were protected along the Flathead River. With nearly 9,000 acres conserved through our partnerships, we’re safeguarding clean water, essential habitats, and recreational opportunities that benefit our whole community.
