About This Fundraiser

Larry Matson's story is one of unparalleled bravery and sacrifice. A Combat Controller who served with the elite 24th Special Tactics Squadron at the start of the War on Terror, Larry was among the first to deploy after 9/11. He stood at the tip of the spear during some of the most dangerous missions of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Larry’s service placed him shoulder-to-shoulder with warriors like John A. Chapman, the only Air Force Medal of Honor recipient since Vietnam. His role in one of the Air Force’s most decorated communities underscores the immense sacrifices he made for this nation.

Larry gave his body, his mind, and his family relationships to protect our freedoms and ensure America’s security.

But today, Larry is facing unimaginable hardships. He suffers from a heart condition, lung issues, and early-onset Alzheimer’s. He no longer remembers the hero he was or the proud community he served with.

Despite his sacrifices, Larry has been left with no disability benefits and struggles just to get by.

Currently, Larry pushes a shopping cart at Winn-Dixie two days a week. This work is not out of choice or ability but out of the empathy of a kind manager whose own mother has Alzheimer’s.

As Larry’s condition worsens, it’s clear he will need memory care or assisted living very soon—a necessity far beyond his current means.

Larry’s situation is a stark reminder of the burdens carried by so many veterans who gave everything in service to their country. The physical and mental toll of his service, coupled with the lack of support in his most vulnerable years, is a reality no hero should ever face.

Larry’s contributions helped shape the safety and freedom we enjoy today. The least we can do is rally to his aid now.
