As the year comes to a close, I hope you’ll allow me to share one powerful story that reflects the heart of Margaret’s Village—and the impact of your generosity.

In May of this year, Janice came to our shelter after being homeless for four years. She had never had a home of her own. She had no identification, no personal belongings, and had been off her mental health medication for several years. She was deeply vulnerable and unsure of what her future would hold.

At Margaret’s Village, Janice was welcomed with warmth, safety, and dignity.
We provided clothing, toiletries, food and essentials. We connected her to our mental health and primary care clinic so she could restart medication and begin therapy. Slowly, she regained strength, stability, and hope.

This fall, Janice was selected for the All Chicago Accelerated Moving Program, which helps high-risk shelter residents transition quickly into housing. On November 13, 2025, she turned the key to her very first home.

Before she left, our staff prepared a care package—cleaning supplies, linens, toiletries, and a few small comforts—to help Janice settle into her new life. Through AME, Janice also received help with her security deposit, first month’s rent, and furniture from the Chicago Furniture Bank.
