It’s the giving season. You are probably receiving donation requests from your favorite charities, and we hope that Margaret’s Village is among them. It’s time for our year end appeal too.

At Margaret’s Village, we open our hearts to make our residents feel safe and help them regroup until they can realize a life they deserve. We also provide our neighboring senior citizens with meals and companionship several days a week at the Vincennes Senior Center.

Before I ask you for a donation, I thought you might like to meet some of the caring staff who make a difference in the lives of our residents’ day after day, year after year.

I came to Margaret’s Village for the opportunity to work at a family shelter. Homelessness effects the entire family. It takes work to build faith and trust in the program and in me. It’s necessary to get the proper information out of the family so that I can provide the personalized help that they need. The situations they come out of are serious and to help them navigate through it, we must get to the truth – and that requires trust.

Being in a shelter, especially with children can feel terrible. I let my clients know that they are not alone and use all the tools at my disposal to help them overcome their present circumstances and to achieve their goals. Seeing my clients achieve success is what motivates and keeps me going despite the difficulties of working with our population. With our help, people overcome defeat every day.

We are unique among shelters in that we house in-tact families with fathers as well as older boys who can remain with their families. Our clients arrive with challenges that may appear insurmountable, but we know that the road to homelessness is filled with very intense and difficult experiences. Our staff possess valuable lived experience that helps to inform our daily practices so that we operate with the capacity to serve the most at-risk clients.
