I had the privilege to sit and witness MIO’s first live viewing at Mountainview Correctional Facility. The live play was performed by eight men that are serving their time at Mountainview. Although, they’re there for different reason’s these individuals came together to help us understand.
What was it that I and others in attendance needed to understand? The challenges of not giving up, keeping a positive outlook, and coming together to speak about there life experiences. Ultimately, this play created a foundation for others to understand that they’re not alone. Challenges amongst this community will continue but not without holding a belief that good will eventually come. Hearing "I EXIST" from everyone performing helped reiterate that although confined from society their voices can and should be heard. They’re still a part of something and even better they’re a part of Maine Inside out.
Maine Inside Out has already been servicing individuals to express any form of transformative justice through art. Plays like “If Not Us, Then Who?” was in addition to already creating similar theatre in schools. Helping to reach out to a wide range of kids. Being a part of the board has helped me realize that having a voice is everything. Nobody should sit in silence.
I’m asking my community to show any support they can to MIO. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated. I’ll even throw in a hug! These donations will truly help individuals that need additional support in and out of correction facilities.
