Last year, The Equity Council Corp. had the honor of celebrating the 4th Annual Malcolm X Book Fest and the 100th Birthday of Malcolm X with our community—an unforgettable moment rooted in culture, literacy, and empowerment.

Through the generous support of $10,000 grant from NBCI Trust (National Black Cultural Information Trust) in 2023, we were able to place over 1,500 brand-new, culturally relevant books into the hands of more than 800 children—from pre-K to 12th grade over the course of 3 years.

These weren’t just books.
They were mirrors. They were windows. They were tools for identity, confidence, and knowledge.

In partnership with Dare Books, Central Florida’s oldest Black bookstore, we stretched every dollar—purchasing high-quality titles at discounted rates to ensure our children had access to literature that reflects their history, their culture, and their brilliance.

We have proudly served as careful and committed stewards of this funding.

But now, we face a difficult reality:

This will be the final year we are able to give away books through this grant.

If we do nothing, the program ends here.

No more free books.
No more home libraries being built.
No more culturally affirming materials reaching the children who need them most.

And that is not a future we are willing to accept.

So today, we are asking our community to step in where funding has fallen short.

Your donation will help us:

Continue giving away free, culturally relevant books
Expand access to home libraries for children and families
Supply community centers and Black private schools with needed reading materials
Sustain a program that directly impacts the future of our children

This is bigger than a festival.
This is about ownership of our stories, access to knowledge, and building generational literacy.

Malcolm X taught us the importance of self-determination and investing in our own communities.

Now, we must live that principle.
