A Full-Circle Journey: Transforming Education with CFC

This year, Mishti celebrates her 31st birthday with a full heart and a deep sense of gratitude. Her journey with Caring for Cambodia (CFC) began back in high school after an eye-opening Interim Semester trip to Cambodia. The trip inspired her to make a difference in the lives of children in Cambodia, so she joined the high school chapter of CFC, where she served as Treasurer and later as Vice President. This involvement laid the foundation for a lifelong commitment to the mission of CFC.

As she moved on to college at the George Washington University, Mishti continued her dedication to CFC as a volunteer. Her passion for the organization deepened, leading to her appointment as CFC’s UN Youth Representative. This role took her to the United Nations in New York and Geneva, where she worked to advocate for education and youth empowerment globally.

In April 2024, Mishti’s journey came full circle when she joined the CFC Board. From a high school student inspired by a trip to Cambodia, to now an active part of CFC’s leadership team, it’s a moment that fills her with pride.

Why CFC is So Important to Me

To Mishti, CFC is much more than an organization—it’s family. What makes CFC so important to her is its unwavering commitment to transforming education and breaking the cycle of poverty for Cambodian children. As someone passionate about education, global health, and partnerships, she is inspired by CFC’s holistic approach. The programs go beyond schooling to include nutrition, hygiene, teacher training, and career readiness. This comprehensive model ensures that Cambodian children have the tools to thrive, not just in school, but in life.

Education has been pivotal in shaping Mishti’s worldview, and she recognizes the privilege of having had access to quality learning environments. CFC’s mission resonates deeply with her as it helps children who may not have this privilege achieve their dreams. CFC’s emphasis on sustainability and local leadership is particularly meaningful, as Mishti believes true, lasting change is driven by empowering communities, not imposing external solutions.

Programs That Matter Most to Me

While Mishti is passionate about many of CFC’s programs, two stand out: Food for Thought (FFT) and Gender Equity. She fondly recalls waking up early to help prepare breakfast for the children in the FFT program during her visits to Cambodia. The infectious energy and laughter of the children serve as a powerful reminder of why this work matters.

The Gender Equity program is another key area of focus. Mishti believes that empowering women and girls starts with empowering their entire ecosystem. CFC doesn’t just talk about gender equity—they live it, creating a space for community members to learn about and practice gender equity, ensuring that the next generation of girls has the tools to lead and succeed.

A Personal Connection to Cambodia

Mishti has visited Cambodia multiple times, and each trip leaves her with unforgettable memories. She cherishes the opportunity to meet with Savy and the incredible CFC leadership on the ground, as well as spending time with the students and teachers who are the heart of CFC’s programs. During her last visit, she had the opportunity to lead a workshop on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for CFC faculty—a rewarding experience that deepened her connection to the cause.

As an amateur photographer, Mishti also loves capturing the magic of the CFC community through her camera, documenting the vibrant energy of the children and educators.

Looking Ahead: The Future of CFC

As Mishti reflects on CFC’s profound impact, she is excited about the future. The work CFC is doing is revolutionizing Cambodia’s education system and empowering communities for success. With each passing day, more lives are being changed, and Mishti knows that there’s much more to come. In this new season of growth, there are both challenges and opportunities to continue empowering the next generation of Cambodians.
