Moe’s Story

Newport News, 2005. A young orphaned river otter named Moe came home to the Museum after losing his mother to a boat accident. Having spent many early months with a human family, Moe developed a comfort around people that made his potential release back to the wild not possible.

For two decades, Moe delighted thousands of visitors with his playful spirit and intelligence. Through our Otter Tours program, he connected guests with the importance of protecting waterways and the creatures who call them home.

Throughout his remarkable 20 years—making him the oldest river otter on record—Moe became a beloved resident at our museum and the inspiration for our logo rebranding in 2007. His playful antics in the water, his curious investigation of enrichment toys, and his attentive gaze during training sessions endeared him to staff and visitors alike.

Moe's days were filled with morning swims, training sessions where he showed remarkable intelligence, and special moments of connection with guests of all ages. His natural charisma turned casual visitors into passionate advocates for river otter conservation.

Moe's extraordinary life continues to inspire our conservation work. Through educational programs and outreach, his story helps us all understand the importance of preserving local waterways, wildlife habitats, and ecosystems.
