Lunar New Year is celebrated by billions of people around the world, and for many, it is a time for family reunions, abundant food, and joyful celebrations.

AAPI Montclair’s first-ever Lunar New Year celebration will feature family-friendly educational, cultural, and social activities to offer community members a chance to celebrate and learn about Lunar New Year together. Ring in the Year of the Tiger with cultural performances including a Chinese lion dance and Korean fan dance; arts & craft activities led by MAM educators; and special themed food, drinks, and merchandise available for purchase, all in a COVID-cautious setting outside on the grounds of the Montclair Art Museum.

Lion Dance and Martial Arts Demonstration by Wu Shu Kung Fu Fitness; Opening Remarks by Guest of Honor Congressman Andrew N. Kim (NJ-3)

Korean drumming; performances by Montclair Public Schools Mandarin Program; Korean Traditional Dance of Choomnori Fan Dancers; Junior Bees of the Hive Dance Studio (Filipino hip-hop)

In keeping with LNY's emphasis on family, a portion of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Kaija Jung Andersen Memorial Scholarship, which honors Kaija's vibrant and love-filled life by supporting graduating seniors from MHS who exemplify her spirit of compassion, curiosity, and courage.

This event is free to MAM members! Please reserve your free tickets through the "Tickets & Donate" button. (Become a MAM member today!) Following our core value of inclusion, we have set general admission at just $5 for non-members (fee waivers available). If an additional donation is within your means, we offer our deepest thanks for helping to keep this celebration affordable for all.

COVID SAFETY PROTOCOLS:

  • Per MAM's COVID safety policies, all visitors and students ages 5-11 must show proof that they have received at least one dose of an approved vaccine against COVID-19. All visitors and students ages 12+ must show proof that they completed the primary series of vaccinations against COVID-19. Proof of negative PCR or rapid testing is no longer permitted instead of vaccination.
  • We strongly recommend that our guests wear high-quality masks. All guests ages 2+ must wear masks if entering MAM to use the restrooms or participate in additional craft activities.
  • Capacity will be limited to allow for social distancing.

AAPI Montclair is a grassroots organization of over 550 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the Montclair, NJ area. We are a space to share experiences and help unify our voices to create action and representation for our community. We welcome all AAPIs and parents of AAPI children in the Montclair, NJ area.

About the Montclair Art Museum

The Montclair Art Museum (MAM) boasts a renowned collection of American and Native American art that uniquely highlights art-making in the United States over the last 300 years. Works in MAM's Native American art collection span the period of ca. 1200 C.E. to the present day. The Vance Wall Art Education Center encompasses the Museum’s educational efforts, including award-winning Yard School of Art studio classes, lectures and talks, family events, tours, and the mobile MAM Art Truck. MAM exhibitions and programs serve a wide public of all ages, from families and seniors to artists, educators, and scholars.
