Original Artwork + General Admission - You'll leave at the end of the night with an original artwork created by one of our many amazing alumni.

There are a limited number of artworks, so be sure to purchase your tickets today! Don't wait!

Artworks have all been wrapped in brown paper, you won't know which artwork you've chosen until you get home and unwrap it.

In 2015, the Mudhouse Residency began with a simple vision—bringing artists to the unique village of Agios Ioannis. That first year, we welcomed just two artists. Now, a decade later, our residency has blossomed into a vibrant program, hosting over 45 artists each summer over multiple sessions.

This growth is not only about art—it's about life, community, and economic vitality. Agios Ioannis, once largely abandoned by its original inhabitants, has found new energy in the creative spirit of these artists. Thanks to their presence, the village's sole kafeneio, that used to only open in August, is now bustling with life from June through July.

Our future vision? To host artists year-round, continuing to breathe life into this stunning corner of Crete.

The name "Mudhouse" was born from the heart of our story—an intimate connection to this place. It comes from the home of the home of co-founder Varvara Liakounakou, where we would gather in the kitchen for warm conversations over coffee or sit beneath the century-old grapevines on the terrace. Her house was built in the traditional Cretan style, using local materials like lime and soil—what the locals call “λασπόσπιτο,” or "mudhouse." This humble yet beautiful building technique connects us to the land and heritage of Crete, and so it felt only natural to name our residency in honor of this tradition, celebrating both the craftsmanship of the past and the future we're creating here.

The Mudhouse Residency is more than just a place for artists to work; it's a catalyst for cultural exchange and local renewal. By supporting both international and local artists, we're helping to revitalize Agios Ioannis, preserving its history while paving the way for a future that is as vibrant and creative as the art it inspires.

Whether arriving from abroad or from other parts of Greece, artists come to the Mudhouse Residency to engage deeply with place, tradition, and community. Each residency session becomes a shared experience that not only fuels artistic practice, but also contributes to the evolving story of the village—bringing fresh energy, ideas, and connection to a place that continues to inspire.
