"The Gay Clubhouse Project": A Brief History of the Triangle Club

Washington DC’s LGBTQ+ AA meetings date back to 1971, when the first gay AA meeting was held in a private home. Over the next decade, a number of new groups formed in various locations throughout the city. By the mid 1980s, there were about 30 weekly LGBTQ+ AA and Al-Anon meetings in and around the Washington Metro area. However, it was becoming increasingly difficult to secure safe and affordable meeting spaces. This gave rise to the “Gay Clubhouse Project,” whose mission was to form a gay meeting place dedicated to 12 Step meetings. It also became clear that the LGBTQ+ recovery community needed a place to expand their social lives in an alcohol and drug-free environment. The "Gay Clubhouse Project" was renamed Triangle Club and incorporated in 1989 as a non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) tax exempt status. Our doors opened on January 1, 1990.
