Why this matters

Mental health conditions linked to reproductive hormonal changes—including menses, pregnancy, postpartum, infertility, perimenopause, and related medical treatments—are common, serious, and too often life-threatening. Yet the quality of care patients receive varies widely, and access to clinicians with specialized expertise is deeply uneven. These gaps fuel disparities, delay treatment, and lead to preventable suffering and avoidable harm during some of the most vulnerable periods of life.

The gap

In medicine, board certification is the primary way a field defines expertise, establishes standards of care, and protects patient safety. Reproductive psychiatry has lacked this essential structure. As a result, patients and health systems have no reliable way to validate expertise, and the field has no shared framework to guide training, accountability, or quality improvement.

What we are building

The North American Board of Reproductive Psychiatry (NABRP) is developing the first board certification pathway for physicians in reproductive psychiatry. This certification will establish national standards for clinical expertise, safety, and quality of care, bringing clarity and consistency to a field where both are urgently needed.

The certification will also create a designation that policymakers and health systems can track, enabling measurement of workforce capacity and more intentional efforts to strengthen access to reproductive psychiatry expertise over time.

Why now

NABRP has been incorporated and has convened a national group of reproductive psychiatry leaders. The momentum and expertise are in place. Startup funding is needed now to develop the certification exam and core infrastructure, allowing this long-needed standard to move from concept to reality.
