Mission:

New American Ensemble is a process-driven, actor-focused ensemble theater company based in New York City using rigorous collective investigation to tell stories that overtly contend with the boldest and most dangerous questions of self, community and existential context in order to reconnect artists and audiences to a vital experience of the human myth.

Vision

We are building a permanent ensemble of salaried actors, working year-round to create theater of the highest caliber. This model of theater-making, long proven across Europe and throughout history, has consistently produced the most influential theater artists by protecting lineage and sustaining high-level practice over time. The company that brings this model to the United States has the potential to become an institution recognized internationally, alongside the Met Opera and the New York City Ballet.

Next year:

In 2026, we will stage Ivanov by Anton Chekhov. Written in 1887, it is a play about burnout, prejudice, depression (before it had a name), and a community collapsing under the weight of its inability to care for its members.

For six weeks (twice the amount of time usually allotted to explore a play before it has opened to audiences), our ensemble of actors will engage in an expansive rehearsal process, resulting in a finished product that embodies a fervor, a vulnerability and an honesty that cannot be achieved through a shorter, industry-standard, pre-production experience.

Throughout both performance and rehearsal, we will invite audiences and students to participate in the creative process through talkbacks, outreach, and workshops. This is where we step beyond the seed of an idea and into a visible presence, inviting more audiences, more supporters, and more collaborators to connect through experiencing the transformative power of our work.
