My name is Mackenzie Faumuina Rubish. As a baker and a proud daughter of Samoa, I have spent my career sharing our flavors with the world. But today, I am stepping out of the kitchen to fulfill a deeper calling: building a bridge that carries our culture—and our youth—home.

Our non-profit, The Samoa Heritage Bridge, is officially established. In April (2026), I am departing for a foundational mission to American Samoa. This trip is the "groundbreaking" for our inaugural youth delegation planned for late 2026/early 2027.

Where Your Support Goes:

To build this bridge with integrity, I want to be 100% transparent about how your donations are utilized. Every dollar raised is allocated as follows:

60% — Mission Mobilization & Documentation: This funds the high-definition filming of our elders, travel to remote villages, and the legal diplomacy required with the Samoan Government to secure safe, formal pathways for our future youth travelers.
30% — The Heritage Grant Fund: These funds are "locked" to subsidize travel costs (airfare, accommodations, and logistics) for our first group of diaspora youth who will return to the islands in 2026/2027.C
10% — Direct Island Impact: A portion of all proceeds will be donated directly to a local Samoan community program (to be announced during the trip) to support education or food security on the islands.

Your Impact Tiers

We have designed our donation levels to mirror the Samoan values of service and lineage. Each tier represents a specific building block of this bridge:

Aiga ($25): Funds one hour of archival filming with a village elder.
Talanoa ($50): Supports outreach to village schools to connect local and diaspora youth.
Tautua ($150): Funds the diplomacy and "Digital Vault" infrastructure for our archives.
Matua ($300): Documents the complete culinary history of a single village/elder.
Matai ($600): Seeds the travel grant for a next-gen youth to return home.
Gafa ($1,400): Sponsors a full youth traveler and provides VIP access to our 2026 Gala.

Why Your Support Matters

Returning to our roots is a powerful calling, but for many of our diaspora youth, the financial barrier is the greatest obstacle.

The Cost of Connection: Round-trip airfare to American Samoa and Samoa frequently exceeds $1,500–$2,000 per person. When you add the logistics of inter-island travel, traditional village protocol (Suamalie/Siva), and secure housing, the cost of a single youth’s "pathway home" can reach $4,000.
The "Gap" in the Diaspora: Many of our brightest young leaders have the heart to serve their heritage but lack the resources to bridge the 5,000-mile gap. Your donations to the Heritage Grant Fund (30% of all proceeds) directly lower this barrier, ensuring that heritage isn’t a luxury—it’s a birthright.

What the Youth Delegation Will Experience

This isn't a vacation; it is a Cultural Immersion & Service Residency. During their time in the islands, our student delegates will participate in:

Culinary Apprenticeship: Working alongside Matai and Aiga to learn traditional earth-oven (Umu) cooking, Koko Samoa processing, and the harvesting of ancestral ingredients.
Archival Service: Assisting Mackenzie in documenting the oral histories of elders in their own family villages, ensuring their lineage is preserved in our Digital Vault.
Village Protocol (Fa'asamoa): Intensive workshops on Gagana Samoa (language), traditional dance, and the etiquette of the Fale, led by local cultural practitioners.
Cross-Cultural Exchange: Partnering with local Samoan youth organizations to discuss the future of the islands, climate resilience, and food security.

From the Islands to the Community

The journey home is only half the mission. The true "Bridge" is built when our delegates return back to the states and transform their newfound knowledge into community action. Every student who receives a Heritage Grant commits to a year of service as a Cultural Ambassador, using what they learned in Samoa to lift their community here in the States.

1. The "Open Kitchen" Workshops

Delegates won’t just keep the recipes; they will teach them. Upon their return, students will lead community cooking workshops—sponsored by the Samoa Heritage Bridge—teaching other youth how to prepare Koko Samoa and traditional dishes. This ensures that ancestral techniques aren't lost and encourages the next generation.

2. Mentorship & The Living Archive

Our delegates become the next generation of storytellers. They will:

Host "Talanoa" Nights: Local gatherings where they share the footage and oral histories captured during their trip, reconnecting local families to their home villages.
Curate the Digital Vault: They will manage and expand our archival database, helping other community members search for their own family lineages and village connections.

3. Cultural Leadership in the Diaspora

Equipped with a deeper understanding of Fa'asamoa (the Samoan way) and Tautua (service), our graduates are prepared to lead:

Student Advocacy: Taking leadership roles in Pasifika student unions and community centers to advocate for better cultural representation.
Bridging the Gap: Serving as a direct link for local families who want to reconnect with their villages but don't know where to start.
Cultural Navigation: Returning delegates act as "Arrival Mentors," helping those who move from Samoa navigate everything from education systems and job searches to finding community hubs, ensuring they feel "at home" the moment they land.
Economic Support: Through our 10% Direct Island Impact fund, delegates help identify and vet local projects—such as village garden cooperatives, school programs, or culinary arts—that need sustainable funding in American Samoa.

I am going home to sit at the feet of our elders and learn the sacred techniques of our ancestors so that I can bring those skills back here to teach our community. We are turning "I wish I knew my roots" into "I am going home."
