2feet8wheels was founded in 2010 on the basis of engaging local youth and skate enthusiasts alike to safe family friendly events for those who love and appreciate the art of roller skating.

The 12th Annual Skating For A Cure is a roller-skating fundraiser for Breast Cancer Awareness. Typically many agencies have restrictions on how survivors may access funding and offer little supportive financial services outside of clinical assistance.

Skating for A Cure is a fundraiser that has set itself apart and a portion of the event proceeds go directly to a local breast cancer survivor. They may support their basic needs like groceries, pay a utility bill. A survivor undergoing chemo may choose to purchase a wig or hair unit that is culturally specific or more natural looking at a vendor of their choice. We value this direct approach to giving, in other words from the community for the community. As survivors, they may determine how best to use the financial support.

Previously we have honored survivor attendees who attended our very first fundraiser events. There are two whom sadly did not live to attend the subsequent ones (Dorcas Johnson Lindsay and Yalawnda Rawkins) may they rest in peace. We continue to honor their memory. Last year we lost our fighter and fellow skate sister Myra Carmona. 🕯 Myra was a strong advocate for women and battled breast cancer. She disclosed her battle to her beloved skate community and attended Skating for A Cure over the years to donate, uplift and encourage other survivors. Myra had a smile that lit up the room and loved to speed skate at Chez Vous to hip hop classics 💞. We skate this year in her memory. 🌹

While breast cancer impacts people of all backgrounds. 2feet8wheels seeks to support and prioritize the health and wellness of women of color. Black women are now 41% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women, despite a lower risk of being diagnosed with the disease.
