Help Fry Bread amplify Native voices, connect Indigenous creators, and build cultural sovereignty through journalism and storytelling.

Over a century ago, the U.S. government forcibly denied Native Americans our traditional foods, and instead forced “commodity boxes” of white flour, sugar, salt, and lard upon us. While this food was terrible for the physical health of our communities, it enabled us to survive as these ingredients were transformed, with love, into delicious fry bread. Our communities continue to eat it with reverence, and we all know who makes the best fry bread ever: Your grandma.

It is in this spirit FryBread.org was born. It is art devouring colonization. Because that’s what Native and Indigenous folks can do with what is forced upon us. We transform it. We devour it.

Art at Fry Bread is creation. It is culinary. It’s fine arts, music, film, and theater. It’s literary. It’s traditional crafts. And it’s all delicious.

What We Do

We work to uplift Native and Indigenous artists, and we also uplift resources for them: Opportunities to share their craft, fund their lives while they create, and learn more tools.

We also uplift opportunities for allies to learn more about Native art and artists and crafts, from the artists themselves.

Fry Bread is a comprehensive, multimedia journalism and resource platform. It’s a long-term project that focuses on Indigenous creativity and innovation, including Native artist entrepreneurship and economic development in creative sectors; mentorship between established and emerging Indigenous artists; and training and networking opportunities across the arts and entertainment sectors.

Our dedication to amplifying Indigenous voices contributes to the future of our communities and cultural sovereignty.

Why It Matters

In the landscape of mainstream media and art coverage, Native American communities remain deeply underrepresented. When coverage does exist, it is often extractive, lacks cultural context, and is shaped by non-Indigenous narratives and voices. Resources and training opportunities for Native artists are almost completely ignored. Authentic Indigenous-centered journalism is critical to accurate storytelling and cultivating creative health in our communities.

Fry Bread serves as both storyteller and community, linking Indigenous creators and entrepreneurs with resources, mentorship, and collaboration opportunities while producing authentic community-centered coverage through writing, video, podcast, and visual media distributed via FryBread.org, our newsletter and social media, and partnerships with Native-led organizations.

Contributions to this fund will help pay for freelance compensation for Indigenous writers, photographers, editors, and storytellers, along with editorial production costs and the uplifting of resources that connect Indigenous creators and allies with opportunities across the country and around the world.
