A New Chapter for Westernport Library

The story of the Westernport Library is a story of resilience.

For generations, the Westernport Library has been more than a place to borrow books. It has been a place to learn, discover, connect, and belong—a gathering place for children and families, a resource for students and job seekers, and a welcoming space for the entire community.

On May 13, 2025, catastrophic flooding devastated the library's home at 66 Main Street. The building and collections were lost, and the community lost a place that had been part of Westernport's story for generations. But the library itself was not lost.

The Westernport Library refused to disappear.

On November 3, 2025, the library opened at its temporary home at 121 Main Street. With a smaller collection and a new space, staff and community supporters worked together to begin again. Today, the Westernport Library @ 121 Main is once again a vibrant part of the community—offering books, technology, programs, resources, and a place for neighbors to connect.

But 121 Main is temporary. The Westernport Library's future is permanent.

The Allegany County Library System and its Board of Trustees are committed to maintaining a six-branch library system, including a new permanent home for the Westernport Library. The next step is creating a space that can once again serve Westernport for generations to come.
