Save Our Indian River Lagoon Project Plan

The presentation will provide background history of water quality concerns and Federal and State legislation addressing water quality in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) System. Trends analyzed from the water quality data within the Impaired Water Rule database are presented from 1997 through 2024 for several water quality parameters. The presentation provides insight into areas within the IRL System where recent water quality improvement is occurring, where water quality concerns still exist, and where additional surface and groundwater restoration needs to occur.

The seminar will end with a live Q&A session. Given the limited seating in the Lagoon House and an increased demand for in-person tickets, there is a $5 in-person attendance fee. About the Speaker

Don Deis has worked for 45 years in the environmental science field as a consulting marine ecologist to industry and government. His areas of interest include environmental evaluation, assessment, and monitoring of marine, estuarine, and coastal projects; restoration of estuarine and marine ecosystems; impacts of oil and gas exploration, development, and transport; disaster response planning; natural resource damage assessment (NRDA) related to disasters; and environmental rules and regulation. Mr. Deis has authored or coauthored many technical reports and published several papers in his areas of interest. During his career, he worked on many of the large restoration programs in Florida and around the U.S. including Everglades Restoration, Mississippi River delta area restoration, Missouri River, and The Deepwater Horizon oil spill. He worked on several projects in the Indian River Lagoon system including working with Sebastian Inlet District on permitting of the Intracoastal Waterway to Inlet channel and the follow-up study of the seagrasses on the flood tidal shoals from 2007 to present. He retired as a Vice President/Principal Scientist from AtkinsRealis, an international science and engineering company, and has been working with Brevard Zoo and others on seagrass and other restoration projects within the Indian River lagoon system. He is currently the chairperson of the Citizens Oversight Committee for the Save Our Indian River Lagoon Project Plan.
