"I joined ASAS back in 1960 as a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin, pursuing my doctorate in Endocrinology under the incredible mentorship of Dr. L.E. Casida. Fred often heard from Dr. Casida,“let the animal do the talking," which was an excellent concept to learn! He was a passionate advocate for ASAS, and it meant so much to see our research, including some of my own, published in the Journal of Animal Science (JAS). I’ll never forget giving my first oral presentation at the ASAS Annual Meeting in Chicago in 1964. That moment marked the beginning of a lifelong connection to a society that has always felt like home.

Later, as a faculty member and investigator at Oregon State University, I encouraged my students to publish in JAS and share their research at ASAS meetings, just like I did. Those experiences were formative for me, and they still are for students today. Opportunities for young scientists to present, publish, and connect at ASAS meetings are now possible thanks to the ASAS Foundation. That’s why I’m proud to support the One Day for ASAS campaign - because investing in these students means investing in the future of animal science.

"My mentor and friend at ISU, Dr. M. Peter Hoffman, encouraged me to join ASAS. That one invitation changed everything. While I’ve worn many hats throughout my career, my roots will always be with ASAS. It is this ‘family’ that gave me my start, believed in my potential, and helped shape the path I’ve taken. Now, as a retired university professor, with five years at Virginia Tech and 32 years at Colorado State University, I had the privilege of teaching and mentoring students, helping them become skilled and thoughtful scientists and leaders.

"ASAS has been part of my life since graduate school, shaping my journey from a farm in Oklahoma to a career in ruminant nutrition, teaching, and mentoring. One of the most rewarding parts of my work has been helping students grow into confident, capable scientists. Patty, a lifelong educator, shares that same passion for mentorship. We’ve always believed that all students deserve strong support as they pursue their goals.

Supporting ASAS in perpetuity was an easy and heartfelt decision for Patty and me. That's why we included the ASAS Foundation in our estate plan, so we can continue supporting future leaders long after we’re gone.
